Apple Berry Crumble

Quick and easy dessert…

Ingredients:

  • 2 granny smith apples, peeled and cut into medium slices
  • About 1 cup blueberries or blackberries (or a bit of both)
  • 4 ounces applesauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Crumble topping:

  • 1  1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup quick-cooking oats
  • 4 ounces (1 stick) cold butter
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

Preparation Method: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. You will need an ovenproof dish

  1. First, make the topping. Place the flour, oats, butter, and sugar in a food processor and pulse a couple of times until it resembles crumbs. If you don’t have a processor, place the flour in a large mixing bowl, then add the butter and rub it into the flour lightly, using your fingertips. When it all looks crumbly, add the brown sugar, oats and combine that well.
  2. Arrange the fruit and applesauce in the dish, sprinkle with the sugar, and then top with the crumble mixture, spreading it out all over the fruit with a fork.
  3. Place the crumble in the oven and bake for about 40 minutes until the top is golden and you can see the fruit bubbling along the sides. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or my favorite, hot custard.

*Use any fruit combination you enjoy to vary up this dish.
